Have you ever noticed that New Year’s resolutions are usually pretty dull? Everyone resolves to start going to the gym; people resolve to be nicer to each other, or to study harder, or to do better at work. And within a few weeks, most people forget their resolutions and slide back into old habits. Well, we believe the best New Year’s resolutions are the ones you actually want to keep. Here are five fun resolutions you’ll want to make (and keep!) this year.
Take a day off from chores. Sometimes it feels like you’re on a never-ending treadmill of doing dishes, washing laundry, and fixing meals. This year, give yourself a break from chores. Pick one night where everyone in your family uses disposable plates and plastic cutlery so you don’t have to do dishes. Order pizza or get takeout one night so you can take a break from meal prep. And try a grocery delivery service like Instacart or AmazonFresh so you can skip a trip to the grocery store. By finding a way out of tedious chores, you’ll have more free time to do the things you love.
Give yourself a holiday. If you’re like most people, you probably spend most holidays or long weekends visiting family, catching up on work, or tackling major house cleaning. This year, make a plan to take some time off for yourself. Whether it’s one day or one week, take a vacation that is all about you. You can stay in town and visit the local museums and art galleries, or stroll through a botanical garden. Or maybe you’ve been wanting to stay at a bed-and-breakfast or go to the beach. Whatever trip you’ve been putting off, this is the year to take it. Don’t worry, that promise to visit your in-laws or that plan to clean out your storage unit will still be waiting for you when you get back.
Resolve to play more. When is the last time you took your dog to the park and ran around carefree for an hour? When can you remember playing a board game with your kids without keeping one eye on your watch and planning your next chore? So many of us are ruled by our smartphones and answer to our fitness trackers. This year, resolve to have some guilt-free fun. Choose a day when you don’t have deadlines hanging over your head. Then take off your smartwatch, put away your phone, and throw yourself into something fun that you can truly enjoy with your whole being. Whether it’s shopping, gardening, playing with your kids, or spending time with friends, you deserve to fully enjoy it.
Shop for yourself. Are you guilty of buying things for other people, but never for yourself? Maybe you only buy ice cream or steaks when guests are coming over. Or maybe you buy jewelry as a gift for others, but rarely splurge on yourself. This year, break the habit of putting others first. If you see something you like, buy it instead of telling yourself you don’t need it. And if you’re shopping for a gift, get something for yourself at the same time.
